LED Facials: The Latest in Treating Acne and Aging
We at The Portland Girl are soooo excited to expand our skincare menu! Our studio boasts a full range of new treatments that will help us take our facials to the next level. We love our current treatments, as do our clients, and we pride ourselves on keeping up with the latest skincare treatments and technologies. So when we find a new treatment that’s proven to be extremely effective, we put in a ton of research and save up in our Portland Girl piggy bank to bring it to you! (Because you deserve the best!)
After extensive research, we’ve recently invested in a few new skincare therapies that will help us better target acne and anti-aging, the two most common conditions our clients seek help for.
Today, I want to tell you about the one I’m the MOST excited for: LED light therapy.
You’ve probably heard of LEDs before, and I’m sure you’ve seen them in decorative lighting. Think light-up holiday decorations and those nifty rope lights you can use for track lighting. LED stands for Light Emitting Diode and was first developed by NASA. LEDs have tons of useful lighting applications, but did you know about their potential in skincare? Neither did we until about a year ago!
How LED Facials Work:
LED light therapy is a non-invasive skincare treatment that uses an array of bright light-emitting diodes. The energy put out by these diodes is measured in nanometers. If this wavelength (i.e. nanometer) is in the correct wavelength, the cells in the dermis layer of skin will actually convert that light energy into ATP (adenosine triphosphate), which is the fuel that the cell uses to do its job. How cool is that?!
LED facials are completely painless and usually quite relaxing to most clients. These diodes send low-level light energy into the deeper layers of the skin and work especially well to combat acne and the signs of aging.
"LED works by releasing light onto the skin to stimulate specific responses from treating photodamaged skin, wound healing, tone and texture issues, and mild to moderate acne (which it is probably MOST known for). The coolest thing about LED is that research shows that it increases ATP (adenosine triphosphate), which increases fibroblast activity, thus upregulating collagen and elastin production.” (Skincare Practices and Clinical Protocol, Milady)
So what about results?
One of the coolest things about LED light therapy is that results are immediate! Our clients all exclaim how amazing their skin looks and feels right after their first treatment, and it only gets better from there! The most incredible thing about LED is that you’ll get better results the more that you do it. So if you are battling acne or working to increase collagen production in the skin, the results from regular LED facials will only continue to improve over time! Pretty cool, eh?
We’ve found that best results are seen with six treatments about two weeks apart with monthly treatments after that. I can’t wait for you to try it! Before you book your first LED facial though, make sure none of the following applies to you, because it may disqualify you from getting one. Here at The Portland Girl, we care about your overall health, not just that of your skin!
Avoid LED facials if you have any of the following:
- Cancer - Epilepsy - Pregnancy - Panic Disorder / Claustrophobia - Hypersensitivity to light or “photoallergy” - Tendency toward phototoxic reactions - Taking of photo-sensitizing or phototoxic medication Also, don’t use with heat-inducing products, chemical peels, or if you’re under a physician’s care. Safety first! I can’t wait to roll this out and start targeting acne and aging like we never have before! You’re skin’s going to love it.
